… how could I resist? This priceless moment occurred right after last night’s debate.

“My Fellow Prisoners”!? OK, this is officially spooky…
This is a clip from a speech John McCain made today in Pennsylvania. And it’s not as though the word “Americans” could accidentally be mixed up with the word “prisoners” because they sound so much alike. And he was not in the middle of talking about his time as a POW.
Now, I don’t like McCain’s politics or ideology very much. But until today, he seemed like a more or less typical conservative politician. Maybe his campaign was a bit more vicious and prone to lies than some, but he seemed like a credible candidate.
But this! This weird, inexplicable word substitution to me is the most bizarre and downright worrisome thing about John McCain that I’ve seen so far. Either he’s mentally still in that prison camp, and suffers from some ongoing subliminal PTSD, and/or he’s just losing his marbles. Surely even the reddest of Republicans can’t want a candidate who is prone to such disturbing and unexplainable mis-statements!
Please, oh please, I hope the mainstream media picks this up for the evening news tonight!
For political junkies who need a fresh fix…
I found a great political blog written by “a citizen who is paying attention” in Alaska. He or she, going by the nom de screen of “AKMuckraker” has a blog called Mudflats.
In Mudflats, the writer – who is well-spoken and seemingly well-connected – gives us a compelling, blow-by-blow account of just what’s happening with the Republicans’ attempts to squelch the Palin Troopergate investigation results.
Local Alaskans who actually know the players weigh in on the comment threads, and I found the conversation riveting. Here’s the post which was updated today: “There they go again; Emergency motion filed with [Alaska] Supreme Court to stop Troopergate investigation.”
Also, these two photos are kind of fun. They were both taken today at rallies in Anchorage. The top photo is from the Obama rally, the bottom one from the Palin rally. (The candidates were not at these rallies in person.) The latest post on Mudflats (on the front page right now) gives the account of the blog writer as he or she attended both rallies.

“Democracy and capitalism are antagonistic entities.”
Here’s my favorite quote for the day:
It’s from Chris Hedges’ article from yesterday in Truthdig.
Hedges’ statement sorts out something cleanly which has been bothering me. I haven’t been able to fathom why Barack Obama has to fight so hard to spin his comment about spreading the wealth around. Isn’t that fundamentally the purpose of governments? Government collects taxes from people who can afford to pay, and then distributes the money to the populace at large, in the form of roads and libraries and food stamps and schools… Why is this considered a bad thing? Why has greed become fashionable?
